His Birth Announcement

He was four days late, we think -- a message to Chris Ryan:

Subject: Hello, and no news yet ...

Yesterday, April 8th, was the due date for Junior's arrival, but so far nothing. Three days ago I took delivery of a Mac SE/30 with 4MB and an 80MB HD. Still, playing with it, and loading up applications etc.

We expected to see you some time in March. Nancy Wilkinson to arrive tomorrow night -- if Junior doesn't put in an appearance, it will be good to catch up with her.

Hope you're all well,

Rob

The following was our 1989 message to friends on the Internet announcing his birth.

A son was born to Robert Marks and Hazel Church at 5:45 pm Eastern Australian Standard Time on Wednesday, April 12th, 1989; mother and son are both doing well. The boy (still unnamed) weighed 8lb 8oz, of length 21", head circumference 34cm. He was born naturally, after a labour of 12 hours. We're close to deciding on a name, and shall inform you all when we have. Hazel's in the Royal Hospital for Women, Paddington, probably until Monday.

Then we decided on a name.

We liked "X" although it was not a family name. (My notion that a monosyllabic family name called for a tersyllabic first name, with the accent on the first syllable has been somewhat stymied by his insistance on "Y".)

The second name was easy -- both his grandfathers were Leslie, and both had died some years before he was born.

Thank you both for your best wishes. Hazel and himself came home two days ago; both well, and he has only woken once in the night for the two nights. Let's hope he's started in the manner he intends to proceed!
